Barcelona convinced that Xavi is the ideal candidate to lead the club despite recent setbacks

Barcelona endured a difficult week last time out as they failed to deliver in two crucial matches in the UEFA Champions League and La Liga.

First off, the Blaugrana were held to a 3-3 draw against Inter Milan, which has all but confirmed their elimination from the Champions League. That was followed by a 3-1 defeat to arch-rivals Real Madrid in El Clasico, which saw them lose the top spot to their arch-rivals.

Following the disappointing results, there has been pressure mounting on manager Xavi Hernandez, with some sections questioning whether the 42-year-old club legend has what it takes to lead the team back to the top.

There have been some reports of Barça already looking at possible replacements for the former midfielder.

However, a fresh report from Mundo Deportivo indicates that the Barcelona board, at this point, have no doubts about Xavi and his suitability for the job.

From president Joan Laporta to the board and the sports management department, everyone believes that Xavi is the ideal candidate to lead this project at Spotify Camp Nou. They are as sure of it as they were when handing over the reins to him after Ronald Koeman’s sacking last year.

The report adds that Barça made Xavi’s appointment was made keeping in mind that it will be a medium-term project. Furthermore, the squad was built in the summer with the 42-year-old’s inputs and plans, and the club are aware that he will need time to get things on track and getting rid of him makes little sense.

Furthermore, the board is also aware that Xavi has not been able to count on a fully-fit squad over the past few weeks which has had an obvious impact on the results. Within the club, they are confident that things will improve once the injured players return to action.

Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste affirmed the faith in the 42-year-old club legend at the Ballon d’Or gala last night, saying: “There is optimism in the squad. The dressing room is fine. Of course, there is total confidence in Xavi.”

It is now up to the Barcelona legend to inspire his team and spark a turnaround, starting on Thursday night when they face a tricky opponent in Villarreal.
