Barcelona not planning to make any big signings in the winter market – report

Barcelona’s sporting director Mateu Alemany laid out a clear plan for the team’s transfer strategy during the club’s General Assembly this past weekend.

The 59-year-old explained that they will continue to look for the top free agents in 2023 and ever since, names such as Diogo Dalot, N’Golo Kante and Marco Asensio have been linked with Barcelona.

But while these names will only be available during the next summer window, the team is not really looking to strengthen the roster in January, says journalist Edu Polo.

He adds that Barcelona plan to have a quiet winter market, meaning that there will be no immediate signings unless it becomes a necessity.

“The initial idea is to have a quiet winter market. There is no forecast of any bombing, except for some injury or unexpected departure,” Polo told Carpetas FCB.

It must be remembered that Barcelona were one of the busiest clubs during the previous winter window.

With injuries gathering steam, the team was forced to enter the market and acquire the likes of Adama Traore from Wolves, Ferran Torres from Manchester City and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang from Arsenal.

As it turns out, the likes of Traore – who was on loan – and Aubameyang were only temporary solutions. The former returned to his parent club ahead of the ongoing season while Aubameyang was sold to Chelsea.

So for now, there is no such plan in place for the upcoming market. Xavi is satisfied with the squad at hand and as long as there are no unexpected injuries and departures, Barcelona will walk through the window rather quietly.

So far this season, Barcelona have lost some key defenders through injury. This includes Ronald Araujo and new signing Jules Kounde.

Both players picked their respective injuries during the international break and while Kounde is close to making a comeback, Araujo won’t be available at least until the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This probably means Barcelona might look for a defender if the problem continues to persist, with Inigo Martinez of Athletic Club being linked. If not, one can expect the Blaugrana to go through the January window without any headline signings like earlier this year.
