Former PSG superstar admits he needed therapy after Barcelona’s historic remontada in 2017

Speaking in an interview recently (h/t SPORT), Edinson Cavani admitted that he needed therapy after witnessing Barcelona’s remontada against his former club Paris Saint-Germain during the 2016/17 season.

The said match went down in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie between the two giants of European football. The first leg, played at Parc des Princes, saw PSG take a 4-0 win, following which it pretty much looked like they would go through to the next round.

However, Barcelona turned things around in a spectacular fashion in the second leg at Camp Nou, pulling off a memorable 6-1 victory that earned them a 6-5 aggregate win and a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

It was one of the greatest comebacks witnessed in the history of football as Barça, then managed by Luis Enrique, stunned Unai Emery and his PSG team who believed that they had a foot in the door to the quarter-finals after the first leg.

Cavani, who was part of that PSG side and scored in both home and away legs, has now revealed that the defeat to Barcelona affected him mentally and he had to see a therapist regularly to put it behind him.

The Uruguayan, who currently plays for La Liga side Valencia, said: “I went to therapy after Barça’s comeback against PSG.

“Barça’s comeback at PSG affected me so much. It’s only football, but it affects you as a person. After that, I had anxiety symptoms, cold sweats, and I would get dizzy before sleeping and I was scared of falling asleep. I would ask myself: Am I sick in the head?”

Cavani spent three more years at PSG after that before leaving for Manchester United in 2020. After two seasons in England, he has now joined Valencia and will be coming face to face against Barcelona later this month in La Liga.
