Official: Barcelona defender has a dislocated shoulder, could be out until after World Cup

While Barcelona cruised to a thumping 4-0 victory over Athletic Club on Sunday night, the triumph came with a couple of injury blows.

Firstly, Gavi had to be taken off in the first half after he picked up a knock. However, manager Xavi Hernandez has assured that the midfielder’s condition is not something to be worried about.

But late in the contest, one of the club captains, Sergi Roberto, had to be stretchered off the field. And Barcelona have confirmed that the right-back is ruled out for the foreseeable future after suffering a dislocated left shoulder.

In an official statement, Barcelona said: “The first team player Sergi Roberto has a dislocated left shoulder. He is unavailable and his recovery will dictate his return.”

Roberto had been playing well on the night against Athletic and had even got a goal for himself in the first half, making it 2-0 after being set up by Ousmane Dembele.

Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Roberto’s injury will likely keep him out of action for the Blaugrana’s remaining matches before the FIFA World Cup.

The report further states that the 30-year-old’s World Cup chances are also in jeopardy because of the injury. Spain manager Luis Enrique was reportedly considering calling up the La Masia graduate, but he could now miss out due to a dislocated shoulder.

In such a case, Roberto’s return to action will be slated in for New Year’s Eve when Barcelona take on local rivals Espanyol after the FIFA World Cup.
