Barcelona striker suffered an injury setback two weeks ago which affected recovery – report
Memphis Depay has been out of action since late September when he picked up a thigh injury while on international duty with the Netherlands.
The 28-year-old was initially expected to be back within a month, but it has been over six weeks and there has been no definitive update on his situation as of yet.
It has led to a lot of speculations that Depay had been slowing down his recovery in order to not risk himself prior to the upcoming FIFA World Cup which will begin in around a week’s time.
The Dutchman had recently lashed out at those reports and now journalist Toni Juanmarti has come up with an update on why Depay’s recovery is taking time.
According to the journalist, the 28-year-old’s rehabilitation was well on track and progressing as intended until about two weeks ago when he suffered a major setback. It is the reason why Depay has yet to return to action.
The former Manchester United and Olympique Lyon ace has played just three matches across all competitions this season. Since sustaining the thigh injury, the 28-year-old has missed as many as 12 matches across all competitions.
Depay has not been named in the squad for Barcelona’s final La Liga game before the World Cup break when they take on Osasuna later tonight.
While he may yet to make a return to full fitness, there are little doubts over his inclusion in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup as manager Louis van Gaal sees the forward as an integral part of his plans.
