Real Madrid manager hails Gerard Pique as ‘one of the strongest’ following retirement

Gerard Pique has been at the center of attention in Spanish football this week after abruptly announcing his retirement from professional football.

The recent game against Almeria was the defender’s last game for Barcelona, with the club setting up a grand farewell for the player. Almost all of his Barça teammates have already heaped praise on Pique for his years of service to the club.

And it appears even Real Madrid Carlo Ancelotti has joined the bandwagon, hailing Pique for his successful year. The Italian even called him one of the strongest defenders he has ever seen.

“Pique in my personal opinion is one of the strongest central defenders I have ever seen. Very intelligent on the pitch, very tidy,” said Ancelotti (h/t Football-Espana).

Pique’s decision to retire came in the aftermath of a series of criticism over his performances. The club management was also not entirely happy with the player, especially after he refused to reduce his salary earlier in the season.

Ancelotti believes the decision to retire was a courageous one, as far as Pique is concerned. “He has decided to stop, I think it is important for you to decide to stop and not someone else telling you to stop, that it is not easy to do. It is a strong decision and I wish him all the best,” he said.

During his illustrious career, Pique had featured in 616 competitive matches for Barcelona. He helped the Catalans secure three Champions League titles, along with eight La Liga titles, thus establishing himself as one of the most successful defenders in world football over the past decade.

Ancelotti’s considered opinion on his retirement serves as an indicator of Pique’s legacy as not only a Barcelona legend but a defensive icon in the world of football.
