Aguero reveals Messi was very excited to renew Barcelona contract before exit

Lionel Messi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain last year was one of the most shocking moments in footballing history as it saw the Argentine bring an end to his association with FC Barcelona.

Although Barcelona wanted to extend Messi’s contract, their poor financial structure, coupled with an inflated wage setup made it impossible for them to afford the Argentine.

In a recent interaction with El Chiringuito, former Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero offered a key insight, suggesting it was always Messi’s desire to renew his contract and play with him at Camp Nou.

“When Leo Messi was about to extend his contract with FC Barcelona, every couple of days he got excited – ‘take a picture of me with the Barça shirt’, he used to ask me,” he said in an interview with El Chiringuito.

Aguero joined Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer of 2021. He had reached an agreement with the Catalans in May, with the desire to play with his close friend Messi.

However, a series of events, including Barça’s economic crisis and the failure to offload unwanted stars meant the two were unable to play together, as Messi left the club just before the start of the season.

Aguero was unable to compete in early season matches due to his calf injury. The former Manchester City star returned to the pitch against Valencia in October, but he was soon diagnosed with a heart problem that jeopardised his career.

The forward ultimately had to announce his retirement from football, and terminate his contract at FC Barcelona.
