Barcelona director working on signing €40 million Brazilian wonderkid in January – report

Barcelona seem set to enter the January transfer window for a new midfielder as they look to bring in a player who can cover for and compete with captain Sergio Busquets.

It has led to links with several players in recent days, with Wolves star Ruben Neves emerging as one of the most likely options.

However, reports in Brazil (h/t Mundo Deportivo) are pointing at Vasco da Gama’s teenage sensation Andrey Santos as a subject of serious interest from Barcelona.

The 18-year-old, who has been dubbed as the ‘Brazilian Busquets’ in the media, has been on Barça’s radar for a while now, with reports even claiming that the Catalans had two bids rejected for the teenager.

But it seems like the Blaugrana have not given up their pursuit of the Vasco da Gama sensation and are continuing to push for his signing.

In fact, the report adds that Barcelona sporting director Jordi Cruyff is personally ‘working on’ acquiring the services of Andrey Santos as early as the upcoming January transfer window.

It is also claimed that former Barça scout. Andre Cury, will be collaborating in the deal in order to help the Blaugrana get the transfer over the line.

However, Barcelona are likely to face competition from Premier League club Newcastle United as well in pursuit of the 18-year-old midfield prodigy.

The Magpies were considering making a €35 million offer for Santos in the summer, but ultimately decided against it. However, they still hold an interest in the Brazilian sensation and could make a move for him in January.

Santos, for his part, signed a new long-term contract with Vasco da Gama in September, committing his future to the club until 2027. And the Brazilian outfit will point his suitors towards the €40 million release clause that exists in his new deal.

As iterated earlier, Barcelona wish to sign Santos in January. But they are studying the possibility of lowering the €40 million fee by letting the youngster continue at Vasco da Gama on loan until June 2023. Whether such a strategy works for the Blaugrana remains to be seen.
