Ex-Barcelona forward opens up on exit from the club: “Had to look for a new challenge”

Speaking in an interview recently (h/t SPORT), former Barcelona forward Pedro has opened up on his decision to leave the club in 2015 and join Chelsea.

A product of the La Masia youth setup, Pedro was one of the key members of the Barcelona setup that won everything under Pep Guardiola and continued to play an important role after the Catalan coach’s departure.

However, with Barça signing Neymar and then Luis Suarez in consecutive summers, Pedro’s importance within the side started to wane. And eventually, the winger decided it was time to move on and ended up joining Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

The former Spanish international has now shed light on his decision to bid goodbye to Camp Nou, saying: “It would have been very easy for me to stay at Barça. I could have stayed and been part of the photos with all of the titles. However, I felt like I had to look for a new challenge.”

Pedro then went on to add that he was relaxed about the move as he knew he had given his everything to Barcelona during his time at the club.

“I was calm when I left Barça, as I had always given everything for the club,” Pedro added.

The 35-year-old made 321 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring 99 and assisting 62 goals. He won five La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies among several other honours before joining Chelsea in 2015.

Pedro spent five years with the Premier League giants and won the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League before leaving for AS Roma in 2020. After just a year, he moved to Roma’s local rivals Lazio, where he currently plies his trade.
