Barcelona president did not meet Lionel Messi in Paris, no talks held for over a year

Contrary to Joan Laporta’s claim that he would meet former striker Lionel Messi in Paris after the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday, it’s been learned that the two did not coincide in the city of love after all.

According to RAC1, the player has not spoken to Laporta for more than a year and the two did not meet when the club president attended the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris.

“We want to honour Messi, the best player in history. I’ll see him in Paris on Monday,” Laporta said last week. “I know that Barça means a lot to Messi,” he added.

It must be remembered that Barcelona are pondering the option of Messi’s emotional homecoming once his current Paris-Saint Germain contract ends in 2023.

When asked about Barcelona’s approach in that regard, Laporta had said: “Messi is a PSG player now and we have to respect that, I can’t talk about his return now.”

There have been reports claiming that Laporta and Barça have been working on mending their relationship with Messi following his shock exit from the club last year. However, as per RAC1, they have not interacted with each other for over a year now.

For now, there is no substantial update on Messi’s future as it’s been time and again reported that the Argentine will only make a decision after playing his final FIFA World Cup.

Despite Laporta’s continued insistence, it must be noted that the two do not really enjoy a great relationship after Messi was forced to leave Barcelona in the summer of 2021.

This means that before Barcelona could even think of a return, the two must reconcile in the first place.
