La Liga striker opens up on failed Barcelona move in 2020, calls Lewandowski a ‘top player’

Speaking to Cadena SER, RCD Mallorca striker Angel Rodriguez has claimed that Barcelona were seriously interested in signing him a couple of years ago, but the move ended up collapsing.

Barça face Mallorca away at Son Moix later today and ahead of the game, Angel Rodriguez has revealed that he could have been turning out for the Catalans if things had worked out for him.

The 35-year-old Spaniard is referring to the time when the Blaugrana were forced into the market for an emergency striker in February 2020 following a host of injuries. Angel Rodriguez was among the names linked, but the club eventually signed Martin Braithwaite.

Talking about the interest from Barcelona, the veteran, who was playing for Getafe at the time, said:

“About Barça a couple of seasons ago, it wasn’t a rumour, it was serious. In the end, it wasn’t done and Barcelona signed a great striker like Martin Braithwaite.”

The 35-year-old further opened up on the failed move, saying: “It would have been very good, the culmination of my career, but in the end, it couldn’t be done. You have to stay with the good and that means that at that moment I was doing it well.”

Ahead of Mallorca’s game against Barcelona, Angel Rodriguez earmarked Robert Lewandowski as a huge threat, echoing the words of his manager Javier Aguirre, who called him a ‘killer’.

“Lewandowski is one of a kind. Barça have bet so much on him because he is a killer and a player who not only scores goals but also contributes a lot. He is a TOP player and that is why he is at Barça,” the 35-year-old said.

The veteran striker also admitted that despite the number of injuries at Barcelona, they will put out a world-class lineup that will make things difficult for his team.

“They won’t be there, but others will come out who are also world-class and who will make things very difficult for us,” he added.
