Barcelona president reflects on Champions League elimination: “The miracle didn’t happen”

Barcelona president Joan Laporta spared no efforts in strengthening the team in the summer transfer window. So, the elimination from the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, for a second season in a row, will have come as a bitter pill to swallow.

Inter Milan’s win over Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday confirmed Barça’s exit, following which they put in a timid display and lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich at Spotify Camp Nou.

Following the match, Laporta sent a message addressing the fans, wherein he admitted that the team was always going to have ups and downs on their way back to the top. He also thanked the supporters for standing by the side even in the difficult circumstances.

The miracle didn’t happen, Inter won and the match was emotionally very complicated. We have the best fans in the world and I want to thank them for all their support. You can’t reproach the players for anything, they did their best,” he said.

“We have to look forward. We knew that there would be ups and downs in this process of rebuilding the team,” the Barcelona president added.

Laporta then admitted that Bayern Munich are the best side in the continent, stating: “Bayern are a very consolidated side. They are very powerful, the best team in Europe.”

Finally, the Barcelona supremo addressed the fans again, reiterating that the team will continue to fight for other titles and trophies, saying:

“The message to the fans is let’s look forward. We have La Liga, we have other competitions… And we have the best fans in the world. Xavi has also made the youngsters play so that they can grow.”

Following the disappointment of the result, Barcelona must quickly turn their focus back to La Liga, where they will face Valencia this weekend. They are currently three points off of leaders Real Madrid and must ensure that there are no slip-ups in the competition.
