Calhanoglu reveals advice of former Barcelona goalkeeper for his goal: “ter Stegen’s weak side”
Speaking after Inter Milan’s 1-0 victory over FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, Hakan Calhanoglu has credited goalkeeper Andre Onana for helping him beat Marc-Andre ter Stegen on Tuesday night.
Calhanoglu scored the only goal of the game at the Giuseppe Meazza, firing the ball past ter Stegen and into the back of the net from outside the box with a precise, powerful strike.
The Turkish playmaker had already drawn a crucial save from the Barcelona goalkeeper in the first period but got the better of him the second time around, putting his team in front which eventually earned them three vital points.
And, Calhanoglu has now revealed that he was told by the Nerazzurri goalkeeper Onana to target ter Stegen’s right side.
Onana is a former Barcelona goalkeeper and spent several years on the club’s books, growing through the La Masia ranks.
While he never played for the first team, the Cameroonian would have seen ter Stegen from close quarters for the six months that their paths crossed at the club – the German shot-stopper arrived in 2014, while Onana left for Ajax in January 2015.
And, it seems like the 26-year-old fed his new teammate, Calhanoglu the trade secret that enabled him to beat the Barça goalkeeper.
“We talked to Andre and he told me to kick to ter Stegen’s right, who is weaker on that side,” Calhanoglu told Inter TV after the match.
The result has left Barça third in Group C, three points below Inter and six behind leaders Bayern Munich.
With the Blaugrana set to face the Italian giants again next week at Spotify Camp Nou, a victory will be must for them to stand a chance of going through to the Round of 16.
