Barcelona tried to secure a preferential buy option for Brazilian defender in the summer

Barcelona tried to secure a preferential purchase option for UD Almeria’s Brazilian defender Kaiky Fernandes in the summer earlier this year, claims a report from SPORT.

The 18-year-old Kaiky came through the youth ranks at Brazilian club Santos FC and had been on the radars of Barça for some time now.

In fact, the Blaugrana had a first refusal clause agreed with Santos for the 18-year-old centre-back. However, the Catalan giants decided against taking up that option when Almeria made a bid of €7 million to sign Kaiky from Santos this past summer.

Despite having decided to pass up on the option of signing him, the report states that Barcelona approached Kaiky’s entourage in Miami during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States of America.

During the meeting, Barça tried to get a new preferential purchase option on Kaiky for a fixed price. However, Almeria refused any such possibility as they did not want the teenager’s future to be linked to a different club already.

Since joining Almeria in the summer, the teenage defender has played eight times in La Liga and even featured for 45 minutes in the game against Barcelona this past weekend.

While Barcelona might have been unable to secure a preferential buy option on Kaiky, their approach indicates that the 18-year-old remains on the radars of the club even though they opted not to sign him last summer.

Even though he is still just 18, Kaiky had already made over 50 appearances for Santos before arriving at Almeria.

The centre-back has demonstrated good technical qualities and ball-playing abilities, while also possessing good ground speed, which makes him a good fit for the profile of players Barça are looking at, as per the report.

Whether the Catalan heavyweights look at the possibility of signing him in the future will be interesting to see.
