Barcelona veteran aware of his ‘complicated situation’ at club, January exit a possibility
Gerard Pique has been one of many experienced Barcelona players who have struggled to perform this season. The defender has fallen behind in the pecking order, especially after the arrival of players such as Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde in the summer.
In the current season, Pique has featured in nine competitive matches. His services have been utilised only in the absence of Christensen and Kounde due to injury.
Even then, Pique has faced criticism for his performances, with Xavi now preferring to play Eric Garcia and Marcos Alonso ahead of the veteran centre-back.
According to a report from Diario SPORT, Pique’s apparent lack of game-time spells trouble for the defender’s future at Barcelona. Despite the summer additions, Pique was initially confident of earning a place on the side through his performances.
However, three months into the new season, Pique is beginning to realise that he is seemingly losing importance in the team. His role is expected to dwindle further as the season goes on, especially with Ronald Araujo and Christensen looking to fast-track their recovery.
In light of his struggles, Pique realises that his situation is ‘complicated’ and that his immediate future at Barcelona appears to be in doubt. In fact, nothing has been ruled out in terms of a sale, and there is a possibility the veteran might be offloaded in the upcoming January transfer window.
The 35-year-old, after all, is one of the highest-paid players in the Barcelona squad and his departure could go a long way in freeing up the club’s budget.
However, offloading Pique might not be a walk in the park as Barcelona owe the player millions through deferred salaries. So, working out a strategy to part ways with the veteran defender might be complicated for the Catalan giants.
