Lewandowski will learn suspension fate on Friday following his red card vs Osasuna

Robert Lewandowski got the first red card of his Barcelona career this past Tuesday night when he was sent off just thirty minutes into the game against Osasuna at El Sadar.

The 34-year-old was shown a yellow card around the 11th-minute mark for a foul and received a second yellow and thus his marching orders about twenty minutes later.

While the sending off warrants a one-match ban, Lewandowski was also cited by the referee for a gesture he appeared to make at the match official while walking off the pitch.

Following the match, it was reported that the Poland captain could receive a three or a four-match ban for the gesture, although he has since clarified that he was interacting with his manager Xavi and not making any remarks towards the referee.

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Lewandowski will learn his suspension fate on Friday, as that is when the Competition Committee will meet to decide on the length of the ban that will be handed to the Barcelona striker.

Referee Gil Manzano made the following remarks in his match notes regarding Lewandowski: “Once sent off and When he was heading towards the exit of the field, the player twice made a gesture of disapproval of the referee’s decision, consisting of putting his finger to his nose, and then pointing with his thumb towards the referee.”

“He repeated the gesture again looking towards the assistant referee No. 1 and in front of the fourth official.”

So, while Lewandowski will certainly be sanctioned for one match because of his sending-off, this gesture could earn him an additional ban of two or more games as per Article 124 which reads:

“Address the referees, managers or sports authorities in terms or with attitudes of contempt or disregard. Provided that the action does not constitute a more serious offense, it will be sanctioned with a suspension of two to three games or for a period of up to one month.”

Alternatively, the Barcelona striker could be sanctioned with just a one-match additional ban and a nominal fine.

Either way, Lewandowski will learn his fate this Friday and given that he has issued a clarification on his gestures, it remains to be seen if he is let off without any additional punishment.
