Barcelona could lose €20 million if they fail to qualify for Champions League knockouts

FC Barcelona’s hopes of going through to the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League suffered a massive blow last night when they were held to a 3-3 draw by Inter Milan.

The draw means the Catalans are now left with just four points in four matches, dawdling in third place in Group C. With only two matches left, they must seal back-to-back victories against Bayern Munich and Viktoria Plzen and hope that other results go their way.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the event of yet another elimination from the group stages of the Champions League could spell trouble for Barça, not only from a sporting perspective but also from an economic perspective.

In fact, the Blaugrana could lose out on revenue of more than €20 million if they fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the coveted competition.

The club announced the budget for the 2022/23 season only last weekend, during which they factored in the team progressing as far as the quarter-finals of the Champions League. But failure to qualify for the next phase would mean that the budget takes a hit of at least €20 million.

Losing out on such revenue could be devastating for Barcelona, who spent the big bucks in the market earlier this summer, bringing in a host of top-quality players such as Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Raphinha, among others.

The report from Mundo Deportivo indicates Barcelona cannot offset this loss even if the Catalans go on to win the UEFA Europa League.

Hence, the club are left with no option but to anticipate a miracle in these last two matchdays of the Champions League. They must secure a victory against Bayern Munich later this month while hoping Viktoria Plzen lands a surprise blow on Inter Milan.
