Barcelona to make a renewal offer to superstar, will put him up for sale if he rejects

The contract renewal saga between Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona ran like a soap opera over the past year. At one point, the Frenchman even became a free agent, only for him to re-sign a two-year deal with the Catalan giants in July.

But the short-term extension means that the 25-year-old will again be entering the final year of his contract in 2023. And Barça could find themselves in a similar situation to last season.

SPORT is now reporting that Barcelona are eager to tie Dembele down to a new contract and will be making an offer to renew the speedster.

However, the report adds that in case the French international refuses the offer, the Blaugrana will go ahead and make him available for a transfer rather than wait and see if he changes his mind like they did last time out.

Since signing his new contract, Dembele started the new season on a strong note. However, his form has deserted him a bit in recent matches, with his decision-making in the final third being questioned.

Nevertheless, Xavi Hernandez & co. continue to see the former Borussia Dortmund ace as a vital cog in the side, which is why director Mateu Alemany will make a contract renewal offer for him in the near future.

However, if things do not go as per plans, Barcelona will not wait and put him up for sale on the market in the summer of 2023, rather than wait for him and risk the possibility of a free transfer exit in 2024.

In 13 matches this season, Dembele has scored three goals and registered four assists. He has also been injury-free, barring the minor knock he sustained with France last month.

Whether contract negotiations go according to plans this time out or follow the same path as last time will be interesting to see.
