Barcelona president aims sly dig at club captains over salary reduction refusal

It has been recently reported that Barcelona aim to reduce their wage bill to €500 million by the 2024/2025 season.

Club president Joan Laporta and his board of directors have claimed to be working in tandem to achieve this objective currently.

With Barça bringing in a whole host of big names in the summer, such as Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Marcos Alonso, Hector Bellerin and Franck Kessie, their current wage bill is a whopping €656 million.

But it is understood that those within the club are aware of the fact that such signings had to be brought in order to accelerate Xavi’s project.

However, Laporta has now revealed the roadblock he has encountered in trying to reduce a few first-team players’ salaries.

We have tried, with several players and not only has it not come out but we have had to guarantee €10 million. But we accept it with sportsmanship”, he said, as quoted by journalist Fernando Polo.

Interestingly, Polo has suggested that the club president’s quotes are aimed at Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, as an effort was made to reduce the veteran duo’s earnings, which failed to come to fruition.

Ultimately, it has extensively been reported that the legendary pair could depart the Blaugrana next summer.

With Pique currently being the fifth-choice centre-back and clearly not fancied by Xavi, it is improbable that he continues his stay at the club beyond this season.

While Busquets is still the side’s go-to defensive midfielder, rumours about Barcelona assessing potential replacements such as Martin Zubimendi and Andrey Santos suggests the club are considering a succession plan for arguably the greatest number six of all time.

With the potential departure of both club legends, Joan Laporta will find it easier to accomplish the side’s overarching goal.
