Key reason for Barcelona wanting to complete more transfers in January 2023 – report

Barcelona were one of the busiest tears in the market this summer, bringing in superstars such as Jules Kounde, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, among many others.

However, despite the massive investments, Barça are once again on the brink of elimination from the UEFA Champions League. They are also in the midst of yet another financial crisis, with the club soaring with debt.

But according to a report from Diario SPORT, Barcelona are expecting a busy January as well, as they look to bring in more players, knowing they could be subjected to a 1:4 rule from next summer onwards.

This is because the club are not expected to register much earnings ahead of next season, as they are not in a position to release more economic levers. As such, the club can spend only spend 25 cents of each euro reported as income.

Such a situation would greatly limit Barcelona’s powers in the market, especially in a summer when they are expected to lose Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto, among others.

Although their departures could help the club regenerate some of the wage budget, the club’s early elimination from UCL means they will lose out on income from other fronts.

This is why Barcelona seek to sign the new players in the upcoming January transfer window, as La Liga are not expected to publicly report the salary cap until February. This would allow the club to follow the 1:1 rule, where they can spend the entirety of a hypothetical euro they report aas income.

This will provide greater economic firepower for Barcelona in the January transfer window, thus helping them pursue their top targets in the market.

There have been talks of Barça potentially making a move for Inigo Martinez in January while Bernardo Silva may also become a hot topic.

On the flip side, the club are looking to secure some earnings by getting rid of veterans Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique, along with midfield sensation Frenkie de Jong.
