Official: Andreas Christensen picks up ligament sprain, could be out for three weeks

In yet another injury blow for Barcelona, defender Andreas Christensen has sustained a ligament sprain in his ankle during the game against Inter Milan, the club have confirmed in an official statement.

The Dane, who has done well since joining Barça in the summer as a free agent, was on the receiving end of a tackle from Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the second half during the Catalans’ UEFA Champions League clash against Inter.

After receiving treatment from the medical team, Christensen tried to carry on but could not continue and had to be withdrawn by manager Xavi Hernandez, with Gerard Pique taking his place on the pitch.

The club have since confirmed that Christensen has suffered a ligament sprain while adding that more tests will be conducted on the former Chelsea ace today to determine the extent of his injury and the possible recovery time.

“Andreas Christensen has a ligament sprain in his left ankle. Further tests will be carried out tomorrow to find out the exact extent of the injury,” the statement from Barcelona read.

The reliable Javi Miguel has since claimed that Christensen could be out of action for as long as three weeks, which will come as a major blow for Barça.

The Catalans are already without Ronald Araujo, who is out for over two months, while Jules Kounde is also currently out of action. With the first El Clasico of the season less than two weeks away, Barcelona are left with just two senior centre-backs in Gerard Pique and Eric Garcia.

There is hope that Kounde can return to action in time for the clash against Real Madrid. But Christensen’s injury is certainly a matter of concern for Xavi & co., who lost their second game of the season on Tuesday night.

Since joining Barcelona from Chelsea in the summer, Christensen has played in six matches and has proven himself to be a reliable customer in defence. Xavi and his staff will hope that the 26-year-old is back in action at the earliest possible.
