Premier League midfielder admits desire to play for Barcelona: “It’s a privilege”

In the midst of Sergio Busquets’ poor performances, the speculations regarding Barcelona’s search for a new defensive midfielder is fueling further, with the club reportedly looking at Ruben Neves as a replacement, among many others.

In a recent interview with Channel 11 (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Neves was even asked about the prospect of joining Barcelona in the future. Responding to the question, the midfielder heaped praise on Barça and admitted his desire to play for the Catalan outfit.

“Who wouldn’t want to play for Barcelona? If you ask in general, all the players want to play for Barça, one of the best clubs in the world,” Neves said. “It’s a privilege for me to be associated with this team.”

Neves is currently plying his trade with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, he has featured in 223 competitive matches for the club. However, with his contract expiring in 2024, he could depart Molineux in 2023, or even in the winter transfer window.

Barcelona are among the clubs interested in his services. Although the player is valued at a whopping €40 million, it may not deter Barcelona despite their ongoing financial shortcomings.

And with Neves himself floating the idea of playing for Barça, the Catalans could certainly consider a move in January. At the same time, though, the midfielder does not plan on closing the door on a prolonged stay at Wolves either.

“I’m going to do my job. I’m going to focus as much as possible here because we have a lot of competition. I have to focus as much as possible on Wolves. Having a good season here, things will come very naturally,” Neves added, in the same interview.
