Injured Barcelona defender could participate in the FIFA World Cup – report
According to a report from SPORT, injured Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo could ‘very likely’ play in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
The 23-year-old Araujo picked up a thigh injury in September while away on international duty with Uruguay. The central defender opted to undergo surgery instead of conservative treatment for his injury, which put serious question marks on his involvement in the World Cup.
Indeed, following surgery, Araujo was expected to be out of action for close to two months, meaning his chances of playing in the World Cup did not look bright at the time.
However, according to SPORT, the Uruguayan international could play a part for his nation in the quadrennial extravaganza set to start in Qatar in a little over a week.
This will come as a surprise development and a boost for Uruguay heading into the tournament, given that he is a key player for them and had been in exceptional form prior to his injury.
Uruguay manager Diego Alonso has included Araujo in the 55-man provisional squad for the World Cup and if it is true that the Barcelona ace could be ready to feature in the tournament, it will not be a surprise to see him make the final 26-man list for the competition.
While his faster recovery is certainly good news, fans will be hoping that Araujo is not rushing it so that he can participate in the World Cup, as it could increase the risk of an injury relapse later.
With Gerard Pique confirming his retirement, Barcelona will need Araujo fit and firing for the remainder of the campaign once he completes his rehabilitation.
