National team manager provides injury update on Barcelona star ahead of World Cup

With the FIFA World Cup almost here, the participating nations will soon be naming their final squads for the tournament in Qatar. And Barcelona fans will be paying close attention to the announcement of the Uruguay squad as they wait to see if Ronald Araujo is included.

The centre-back picked up a thigh injury in late September while on international duty with La Celeste. The nature of the injury required the Barça defender to undergo surgery which put his involvement in the World Cup under huge doubt.

But recent reports seemed to suggest that Araujo was making good progress on his recovery and could very well be ready in time to play some part in the World Cup in Qatar.

Amidst those speculations, Uruguay manager Diego Alonso has provided an update on the 23-year-old centre-back’s situation, saying (h/t La Diaria):

“He is in the recovery process, he is doing very well and the information we have is good. We are going to wait until the end.”

The Uruguay head coach will be naming the final 26-man squad for the World Cup next weekend and is seemingly prepared to wait until the last moment to give Araujo a chance of recovering and making it to the flight to Qatar.

However, the Barcelona defender must be wary of the risks of an injury relapse if he rushes his recovery in order to participate in the World Cup.

While it is a dream for any player to feature in the biggest tournament of all, Araujo is still young and will get his chance again. Risking his long-term fitness to rush back in time for the Qatar World Cup would be ill-advised.
