Reasons why Xavi wants 23-year-old La Liga midfielder as Busquets’ heir – report

Barcelona are aware of the fact that in order to replace an exit-bound Sergio Busquets, a considerable investment will be a necessity next summer. In that regard, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is said to be on top of the Catalan giants’ agenda.

As reported before, the Blaugrana have already made contact with Zubimendi’s representatives in order to understand whether or not a move in the next summer is plausible. 

It is understood that Zubimendi’s current contract with Real Sociedad runs until 2025 and if Barcelona wish to pursue the option, they will have to meet his release clause which is worth €60 million.

Worrying things certainly do not end there for Barcelona as Sociedad are currently working on the possibility of extending his stay which would not only appraise his wages but will also increase his release clause amount.

The 23-year-old, who has one assist to his name in six La Liga games thus far, sure comes with a hefty price tag. But SPORT says he is still been considered a top priority at Spotify Camp Nou as he fulfils several criteria.

To begin with, Xavi and his support staff are impressed with how he handles the ball in the middle of the park. Furthermore, despite his young age, Zubimendi has shown leadership qualities, something that Barcelona will need towards the 2023-24 season.

Barcelona are of the opinion that much like Busquets, Zubimendi can bring a great balance to the team as he is physically strong and is perfectly capable of winning the ball in one-on-one challenges.

To say Barcelona’s interest in Zubimendi is something new would be a sheer understatement. In fact, it’s been learned that he has been on the Blaugrana’s agenda for a long time but it is now that the team believes is the perfect time to make a move.

All this is because Busquets will leave Barcelona at the end of the current season to pursue his dream of playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

As far as Zubimendi is concerned, the 23-year-old has built a solid reputation in a very short time. He is someone who is ambitious and wants to win important titles and it is something that Barcelona believe would make him a perfect candidate for the club.
