Barcelona accidentally reveal new shirt numbers for three players
In what was supposed to be a promotional video for social media, Barcelona accidentally confirmed the new numbers for as many as three players, which includes midfielder Gavi, left-back Alejandro Balde and goalkeeper Inaki Pena.
According to Spanish publication SPORT, although the video shot by the team was intended to reveal the new locker room facade, it unintentionally uncovered the new numbers for the aforementioned players.
As far as Gavi is concerned, he will change from wearing the number 30 to donning the number 6, Balde will go from 28 to 12 while Pena will wear the number 13, switching from the number 26.
For an extensive period of time, current manager Xavi donned the number 6 at Barcelona. The 42-year-old took up the number during the 2001-02 season and continued to be its sole proprietor until the 2014-15 season. During this time, he made 677 appearances for the team across all competitions.
Once it was vacated, the likes of Dani Alves, Denis Suarez, Jean-Clair Todibo and Riqui Puig wore the number.
As far as Balde’s new number 12 is concerned, the last player to own that was a certain Martin Braithwaite (2021-22). Before him, Puig (2020-21) was the owner. The most notable holder of the number 12 shirt at Barcelona was Rafinha. The former player wore the shirt between 2014-15 and 2020-21.
On the other hand, number 13 has been mostly kept reserved for goalkeepers, as it was previously worn by Neto Murara. Jasper Cillessen wore it between 2016-17 and 2018/19 after Claudio Bravo had vacated it. The changes mentioned above are likely to take place in January.
