Barcelona will try to sell €20 million-rated forward in January
According to a report published by Mundo Deportivo, everything indicates that Barcelona will try to offload Memphis Depay in January, after the World Cup.
His contract clocks up in 2023, and the club do not want to lose him for free in the summer. The player, though, is looking for exactly that in the hopes of collecting signing bonuses.
In fact, he explicitly requested Barcelona to terminate his contract in the summer so he could join the team of his liking on a Bosman move.
The Catalans folded to his demand soon enough in the hopes of making space in the wage bill, and the Dutchman was oh-so-close to leaving, with a deal agreed with Juventus.
The move crashed due to Memphis’ ‘last-minute demands’, unfortunately, and he decided to play second fiddle to the likes of Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, and Robert Lewandowski.
Currently, the 28-year-old has taken permission from the club to miss the last few days of training to join the Netherlands national team ahead of the World Cup.
He has spent more than the last fortnight injured after picking up a hamstring knock during the previous international break.
While reports suspected that he was intentionally delaying his recovery so as to remain fit for the World Cup, Memphis came out to publicly clear his name.
“I’m hearing some disrespectful rumours about me purposely slowing down my injury. The media sharing things so easily without actually knowing the facts which, as an end result, creates a negative narrative,” he said.
On the last six months of his contract with the Blaugranes, it seems unlikely that the club will be able to fetch anything over €10 million for his services. In fact, several teams will be looking to strike a pre-agreement with the player in the hopes of a summer move.
