Xavi talks Pique, Lewandowski, Araujo following Barcelona 2-0 Almeria
Barcelona continued their stellar start to the league campaign by securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over Almeria on Saturday.
The result helps them maintain pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the league. Reacting to the game, Xavi Hernandez heaped praise on the Barcelona players, including Gerard Pique, who played the final match of his career at Camp Nou.
“Piqué had a great game. It’s a historic night for him. We will miss him,” said Xavi. “Piqué leaves in peace, as I did, and I’m very happy for him.”
“I’m very moved. All of the experiences we’ve had together as colleagues go through my head. A golden age, when we won everything,” he added.
Xavi had shared the pitch with Pique for seven long years before eventually hanging up his boots in 2015. Both players have featured in over 600 competitive matches for Barcelona and will be considered club legends long after their departure.
Talking about the game, Xavi hailed his team’s performance, stating: “We played a very good game. We controlled the rhythm, although we could have scored more.”
The Barcelona coach was asked about Robert Lewandowski not scoring in the tie. But he issued a befitting response, adding: “If Robert doesn’t score, we have others who can do that. Dembélé, Frenkie, Ferran. They can all score.”
Barcelona’s two goals against Almeria were scored by Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie de Jong respectively. It was only the fourth time Lewandowski was not included in the scoresheet in La Liga this season.
Finally, Xavi offered an update on Ronald Araujo’s situation. The Barça coach remained coy about the issue and suggested that a lot can be unveiled in the coming week. “Araújo to the World Cup? We’ll talk about it this week,” he said.
